Health director outlines composting, pest risks and household hazardous waste collection

At the Sept. 10 meeting, Marblehead Health Director Andrew Petty briefed the Board of Health on several community-health items, including plans to expand composting in all town schools, pest-control concerns and an upcoming household hazardous waste collection.
Petty recommended expanding composting to all schools and discussed public-health precautions to mitigate mosquito-borne illness as the season changes. He told the board that a recent dry spell has driven an increase in rodent activity as animals seek water sources; the department distributed a flyer to affected neighborhoods describing steps residents can take to reduce attractants.
Petty also announced a Household Hazardous Waste collection scheduled for Oct. 16, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. He said a separate contractor will handle latex paint at that event and that event information is posted on the Health Department website and has been sent through the town email notification system.
No formal board action was recorded on the composting or pest items at the meeting; the board did approve administrative motions related to grant submissions and transfer station bid updates during the session.
