Board members discussed a proposal to name a shade structure at MacArthur Dog Park in recognition of a donor family that has offered $100,000 toward the project.
Leland explained the MacPark group ran a design competition and helped raise funds for the shade structure, and that an architectural firm and volunteer group coordinated the effort. "Total cost of the project is approximate, $285,000," Leland said, and he added the family offered "$100,000" as a condition of naming the dog park facility. Leland and other board members said the group has worked with city staff and the city attorney's office to follow required procedures.
Tim Heiple, representing the MacPark group, told the board he is not party to the family's internal arrangements but said, "they came forward and said they would like to donate $100,000 in the name of their deceased son," and that the group worked with the city's attorney following guidance on how to accept the gift.
Board members noted state law limits on naming public facilities after living individuals and said they would rely on attorney guidance to ensure compliance. Several directors praised the MAC Park group's volunteer fundraising and partnerships and asked for additional information on the family's relationship to the project before formal action.
