Wolverine council unanimously approves road and paving contracts, accepts sculpture donation

At its Nov. 10 meeting, the Village of Wolverine council unanimously approved a Cheboygan County road contract and a Rieth-Riley paving contract, accepted a donation of an "Unknown Soldier" sculpture for North Park, scheduled a May 9, 2026 village cleanup and approved contingent CD rollovers.
President Ralph Ochs called the Village of Wolverine council to order at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10. Council members Bob Wallin, Sue Beitel and Rick Johnston were present; Laurie Holden (treasurer) and Deborah Johnston (clerk) attended. The council considered several contracts, community events and routine financial matters.
The council voted unanimously to approve a contract and payment for the Cheboygan County Road Commission. The same meeting approved a spring paving contract with Rieth-Riley Construction Co. covering Lincoln Street, Birch Street and McPhee Road; temporary repairs to South Straits Highway will remain in place until that work occurs in spring.
The council accepted a donation from William Dubois of an "Unknown Soldier" sculpture and agreed to place it beside the American Legion Memorial in North Park. The council also approved the P.A.C. village cleanup scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Treasurer Laurie Holden reported that three certificates of deposit will mature in November and two in December and asked for approval to roll them over if the yield exceeds 3 percent; the council approved the contingent rollover.
In other business, President Ochs reported that quarterly water testing for the North and South parks and the public water system returned normal results; sidewalk extensions in South Park were reported as finishing this week; the campground remains closed for the season and is expected to reopen in late April–early May 2026 after electric work finishes; demolition of Chuck Field’s building is scheduled to begin Nov. 20 and finish Nov. 29, 2025. He also flagged trees in the river on the west side of South Straits that could pose a flooding risk and said the council will follow up with the DNR (Department of Natural Resources).
The council noted an anticipated increase in MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) street funding in the FY2026 state budget and a new Neighborhood Road Program, and said it will discuss plans during February budget hearings. An ice rink is being built under the North Park pavilion with projected completion by the end of the week; funding and operations for the rink will be discussed at the December meeting.
The meeting ended with routine approvals of the agenda, minutes and bills; all formal motions recorded were carried by unanimous verbal vote. The council adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
