Wolverine council approves up to $38,000 for new playground; backs community garden and parade idea

The council asked staff to seek a better price if possible (a suggested target of $37,000) before finalizing the purchase.
The action was part of a short slate of motions that passed unanimously. Council member Rick Johnston moved to adopt the meeting agenda, supported by Council member Bob Wallin; the council approved the June 9, 2025 minutes after a motion from Wallin supported by Council member Sue Beitel; and the treasurer's and clerk's financial reports for June were adopted on motions moved by Wallin and supported by other members. Council member Sue Beitel moved to pay the bills as presented, with Council member Rick Johnston supporting the motion; the roll-call vote was unanimous.
During the public comment portion, guest Marty Kellogg raised concerns about excessive vehicle speeds on East Main Street near the park. President Ralph Ochs said he planned to reduce the posted speed to 25 mph at both ends of the park and to install "children playing" signage to increase safety for park users.
In new business the council recorded support for developing a community garden on the vacant rink property along Trowbridge Road; no funding or formal motion text was recorded in the minutes. Council member Bob Wallin also expressed interest in the village organizing its own Fourth of July parade in the future; the council voiced unanimous support for exploring that idea.
The meeting included a president's report noting progress on the Village Park upgrade, recent street work and the South Straits Highway Project (report on file). The council adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
