Wolverine council hires interim clerk, approves personnel and banking changes and parks water work

The Village of Wolverine council on Sept. 9, 2024 contracted Dawn Benac as interim village clerk and approved a series of personnel, banking and infrastructure actions during its regular meeting.
President Ralph Ochs called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Council members Robert Wallin, Tal Babcock, Tansy Sloan, Rick Johnston and Dennis Holden were recorded as present. The council first approved routine items including the July 12 minutes, treasurer and clerk financial reports, and payment of the presented bills by verbal unanimous votes.
In new business, the council voted to contract Dawn Benac to serve as village clerk from Sept. 1, 2024, through Feb. 28, 2025, at $16 per hour; any change in her rate will be determined in the next fiscal-year budget. The motion to hire Benac was made by Robert Wallin and seconded by Tansy Sloan and carried by unanimous voice vote.
The council also approved changes to village banking authorities. A motion by Robert Wallin, seconded by Rick Johnston, removed Sue Beitel from the village checking account and authorized Dawn Benac, Treasurer Laurie Holden and President Ralph Ochs as signers on a new signature card. The body voted unanimously to discontinue the existing debit card and authorized Treasurer Laurie Holden to apply for a credit card, on a motion by Robert Wallin supported by Rick Johnston.
On personnel, the council voted to hire Bradley Long as a village employee at $14 per hour; the motion was made by Robert Wallin and seconded by Tal Babcock and passed by voice vote.
On village infrastructure, President Ochs reported that bids for South Straits Highway (S. Straits Hwy) are anticipated in January 2025 and that routine patching of street holes will continue. The council authorized Roosevelt Street to be striped for safety near the elementary school and directed village employees to apply crosswalk striping by the library and church. Separately, the council put plans for a new village well on hold and approved hiring Whitetail Drilling to bore a 1-1/4-inch water pipe under West Main to supply water to the village park at West Main and S. Straits Hwy; that motion was made by Dennis Holden, seconded by Tansy Sloan and carried unanimously.
The meeting included a brief zoning note that there are five to six grass violations on the enforcement list. The council adjourned at 9:04 p.m.
The contract for the interim clerk runs through Feb. 28, 2025, and any pay adjustments will be settled in the next budget cycle; other actions take effect as administrative steps are completed (bank signature update, credit-card application, hiring paperwork, and contracting with Whitetail Drilling).
