Whiteford Board elects officers, approves calendar and records personnel changes and recognitions

The Whiteford Board of Education held its organizational meeting on Jan. 12, 2026, electing officers by acclamation, approving a 2026 meeting calendar, and recording several personnel updates and community recognitions.
Superintendent Scott L. Huard called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. In organization actions, Shane Hillard was declared president by acclamation; Dave Dixon was declared vice president by acclamation; Jeff Bunge was declared secretary by acclamation; and Janelle Hauser was declared treasurer by acclamation.
The board approved Jeff Bunge as temporary secretary for the meeting on a motion by Shane Hillard and second by Tom Wenzel (recorded vote: 6 yes, 1 abstain—Bunge). It also amended and approved the meeting agenda (motion by Tom Wenzel; second by Brandon Lott) and set the regular meeting dates for 2026 to occur at 6:00 p.m. in the boardroom.
During special presentations, Nancy Gibson, an elementary Title 1 aide, was recognized as Staff Member of the Month for December; Meghann Borgelt of Leski Wittman Insurance Agency presented a $100 gift card. Superintendent Huard presented each board member with a Michigan Association of School Boards Certificate of Appreciation.
Personnel items recorded in the minutes included three resignations: Corey Mills (elementary technology teacher/testing coordinator/ed tech specialist) effective Aug. 31, 2026 (retirement); Ben Avis resigned as assistant high school track & field coach effective immediately; and Ken Groch (Dean of Students) retiring effective June 30, 2026. The minutes also note that Mark Truna will be granted his fifth probationary year effective Feb. 1, 2026. Ethan Layton was appointed volunteer assistant girls' varsity basketball coach.
The board approved two overnight FFA field trips: the State FFA Convention in East Lansing, March 4–6, 2026, and the Region 2 FFA Officer Camp at Camp Michindoh in Hillsdale, April 26–27, 2026. Both motions passed unanimously.
There were no public comments and no future board calendar items recorded. The meeting adjourned at 7:11 p.m.
