The Demorest City Council unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Habersham County School District to place a fully funded officer at Demorest Elementary School, the council recorded at its July 1 meeting.
Councilman Donnie Bennett moved to approve the MOU and gave the mayor authority to sign; Councilman Jimmy Davis seconded the motion, which passed 4-0. City Manager Mark Musselwhite described the county’s proposal as part of a broader effort to have an officer at every county school.

What’s next: The agreement approved July 1 requires coordination between the police department and the school district to implement the SRO placement. Cornelia subsequently removed a related interlocal agreement from its agenda, citing recent growth and capacity concerns; Musselwhite reported receiving an email from Cornelia’s city manager conveying that decision.
