Demorest council previews $2.46 million SPLOST priority list, schedules county meeting

Demorest City Manager Mark Musselwhite outlined a proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) project list at the City Council’s July 1 regular session, estimating Demorest’s share at $2,456,216.
Musselwhite said the draft allocations include $700,000 for fire (to buy two fire trucks), $511,000 for police (seven patrol vehicles), $200,000 for parks, $250,000 for streets, roads and bridges, $200,000 for City Hall improvements and $595,000 for water and sewer projects. He said the city’s estimate factors in the county’s Level 1 jail construction when calculating local shares.
The mayor and council asked staff to take the list to a county meeting on July 7 for further discussion and requested the item be placed on Demorest’s July 10 and July 17 agendas for additional council review. Musselwhite said he will coordinate details and return to council with updated cost information.
Why it matters: SPLOST funds are typically used for capital projects that can reshape municipal services and infrastructure. The items on the Demorest list would affect emergency services, public works and recreation planning in the near term if the county and voters approve a sales-tax measure that includes the city’s requests.
What’s next: City staff will discuss the proposed list with county officials July 7 and return to the council at the July 10 or July 17 meeting with any revisions or additional detail. No formal vote on SPLOST allocations was recorded at the July 1 meeting.
