Sterling Board reviews 2026–27 draft budget, sets dates for votes and referendum

Sara Howley, the district business manager, presented the draft 2026–27 budget proposal and the monthly budget and expense report. Howley laid out a schedule for final action: the board will vote on the proposed budget on March 18, 2026; the Board of Finance will receive and vote on the proposal on April 8, 2026; the public hearing is scheduled for April 29, 2026; and the town referendum will be held May 13, 2026. Earlier in the meeting, the board approved its consent agenda, which included the Jan. 21, 2026 minutes; the Superintendent’s report; the Special Education Director’s report; the Principal’s report; the Clinical Supervisor’s report; and the monthly check register. John Brady moved and Catherine Malo seconded the motion to approve the consent agenda "as presented." The motion passed with all in favor.
The board also voted to approve the Budget and Expense Report presented by Howley. John Brady moved and Benjamin Johnston seconded; the motion passed with all in favor.
Later in the meeting the board voted unanimously to enter executive session to discuss personnel matters. The board entered executive session at 6:37 p.m. and exited at 6:45 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 6:46 p.m. after a motion by Catherine Malo and a second from John Brady.
What’s next: The board will take a formal vote on the 2026–27 proposed budget at its March 18 meeting, followed by the Board of Finance review and the public hearing and referendum schedule noted above.
