Superintendent outlines summer remediation, REAL Tutoring and kickoff-to-kindergarten programs

Superintendent Rebecca Johnson told the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board May 25 that the district will offer summer remediation for retained students in grades K–8 from June 5 through June 29, 2023, with sites and daily schedules assigned by school.
Johnson listed summer school times by site (for example, LPE PreK–4 and ESJP 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.; LES 5th–8th 7:40 a.m.–12:40 p.m.) and named site coordinators, including Dr. Latricia Blain (LPE) and Mr. Corey Lambert (LES). The Alternate Assessment (AA) classes will be held at LES and ESJH to support transitions for 4th- and 8th-grade students attending different school sites. The superintendent emphasized that summer remediation is limited to retained students and that attendance and passing grades do not guarantee promotion; SBLC committees will review promotion after LEAP 2025 scores are received.
Johnson also announced a Kickoff to Kindergarten program for PreK students and described curriculum and instructional materials for summer programming (Heggerty, Amira, Imagine Learning, Zearn, small-group interventions and daily social-emotional learning). She said Okin Educators, an approved LDOE vendor, will provide REAL Tutoring for PreK–3 literacy supports for students who scored below grade level on DIBELS; principals will reach out to parents and enrollment requires completion of an online form via a QR code on the flyer. Professional development for summer staff is scheduled for June 1–2 at LaPlace Elementary.
The superintendent closed by thanking board members for their support and reminding staff of an employee end-of-year gathering on May 29. The next regular board meeting is set for June 22, 2023.
