Harrisville council approves summer events, authorizes $10,000 for ballfield repairs

Mayor Gehring opened the April 14 City of Harrisville Council meeting and the council moved quickly to clear event permits and field maintenance plans.
The council approved use of three ball fields for Alcona Youth Baseball April–July and waived the associated fee after Mayor Gehring presented the field-usage agreement. The council also approved use of the Pocket Park for Porchfest on Aug. 30, 2025 and granted a fee waiver for that event, and approved a Craftmakers Cabin vendor fair July 3–6, 2025 with a fee waiver.
Mayor Gehring told council the infields require crushed limestone and asked to solicit bids and make purchases not to exceed $10,000. A motion by Alderman Schwanz, seconded by Alderman Vanderheuel, to authorize up to $10,000 for materials and repairs to the three ball fields passed unanimously. The council later approved a corresponding $10,000 budget adjustment for ballfield maintenance.
Alderman Bean moved, and Alderman Vanderheuel seconded, approval of Inspiration Alcona’s Harbor Night Concert series—every Friday, 6–8 p.m., from June 13 through Sept. 5, 2025—with harbor bathrooms available until 8 p.m.; that motion carried 6-0.
The meeting record shows the council approved the permits and budget items by roll call without recorded dissent except where noted for other agenda items. The council scheduled the next regular meeting for May 12, 2025.
The approvals clear the way for several community recreation events and for immediate work to restore ballfield infields before the summer season.
