Madison Parish President Jane Sanders and jurors adopted a proclamation on Sept. 22, 2025 recognizing October 2025 as Dysautonomia Awareness Month after hearing a presentation from C. Gonzales of Dysautonomia Louisiana, Inc.
C. Gonzales appeared before the Police Jury to explain dysautonomia, a set of conditions affecting the autonomic nervous system, and asked the body to issue a formal proclamation. The jury amended the agenda to include her and then voted on the proclamation.
The proclamation delivered by President Jane Sanders describes dysautonomia as conditions that can disrupt automatic bodily functions such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature control; it lists forms including neuropathy, vasovagal syncope, pure autonomic failure and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). The text also states that dysautonomia "negatively [impacts] over 70 million people around the world," language included in the adopted proclamation. President Sanders read and issued the proclamation, saying, "I, Jane Sanders of Madison Parish Police Jury, do hereby proclaim the month of October as, DYSAUTONOMIA AWARENESS month throughout Madison Parish."
The vote to adopt the proclamation was recorded by roll call: District 1 (Jerry Hicks) yea; District 2 absent; District 3 (Dave Wilson) yea; District 4 (Johnny Hughes) yea; District 5 (Jane Sanders) yea. The motion carried.
The proclamation encourages awareness and notes Dysautonomia Louisiana Inc.'s 10-year anniversary of awareness and education efforts. The proclamation text included descriptions of secondary conditions commonly associated with dysautonomia (for example, lupus, multiple sclerosis and diabetes) and stated that the illness can be disabling and cause social and financial hardship for patients and families.
