State Civil Service launches Leadership Academy open to all LaGov learners

Dr. Dana LaBerge introduced the CPTP Leadership Academy, a learner-driven program the State Civil Service launched in January to prepare employees for supervisory roles. "When our people are promoted to supervisory positions, they're not ready for those jobs," LaBerge said, explaining the academy was built from agency feedback and research.
The program combines web-based courses with some instructor-led training, and is designed so participants can finish in about nine months if they push or take up to two years. LaBerge said the curriculum focuses on competencies such as emotional intelligence, communication, managing conflict and strategic thinking, and includes a "portfolio builder" so participants leave with deliverables such as action plans and templates.
LaBerge said the academy already has "close to 300 participants" representing more than 30 agencies and the six pay schedules. The program requires participants to attend four live virtual events out of eight scheduled across the year; recordings will be posted to the agency's YouTube channel for later viewing.
LaBerge described the Leadership Academy as one of four planned leadership offerings: a redesigned mandatory supervisor training beginning in the second half of the year, a nominated-cohort "leadership experience" scheduled for 2027 that will focus on solving agency problems, and an executive-education "leadership pinnacle" program planned for later years.
The program is open to anyone with access to LaGov learning, LaBerge said; supervisors are encouraged to support participants as they apply coursework on the job.
