Town attorney to redraft separate ordinances allowing paid municipal employees to serve on boards

The Sterling Board of Selectmen received an update May 6 on a drafted ordinance that would permit paid or salaried municipal employees to serve on certain boards and commissions. Revenue Collector Judith Stumpo said the town’s attorney advised preparing separate ordinances for each body named — Planning & Zoning, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Commission — to avoid conflicts with existing ordinances.
Stumpo told the board the separate drafts are intended to rectify conflicting wording found between the currently drafted ordinance and existing local rules. No motion or vote to adopt any ordinance was taken; the item remained in unfinished business for future consideration.
The board did not provide a timeline in the minutes for when the separate ordinances will be brought back for review or vote.
