Commission advances Cranberry Bog Dam repairs and hears update on feasibility study for Cranberry Bog House

The Carlisle Conservation Commission on Jan. 22 approved an invitation to bid for Phase 1 of the Cranberry Bog Dam #1 rehabilitation project and heard updates on a related feasibility study to adapt the Cranberry Bog House into affordable housing while preserving access to open space.
Town Administrator Ryan McLane described the Phase 1 scope as nonemergency repairs that should precede a Phase 2 defined by an ongoing H-H engineering study. The Commission voted to approve the invitation to bid for Phase 1 work. Sullivan announced that SumCo will present ground-penetrating radar findings for the dam on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. and recommended notifying the Trails Committee because a public trail crosses the dam.
Town Planner Julie Mercier and John Ballantine of the Carlisle Affordable Housing Trust updated commissioners on the Cranberry Bog House feasibility study, which aims to create four affordable units for households earning 30–100% of area median income using Community Preservation Act funds while preserving the historic structure and trail access. Commissioners expressed concerns about septic and well siting, vehicle sight lines, visual impacts to the historic landscape and the implications of removing land from Article 97 protection; Mercier agreed to circulate wetland delineation plans and continue outreach as the project progresses.
