Marie Ochs addressed the Hillman Village Council on Sept. 17 about a lot she and a friend purchased across from her home. Ochs said they planned to build a garage-like structure to store multiple trailers but discovered the parcel is zoned residential and the village requires a primary residence on any lot that contains a garage.
Ochs asked the council for help, saying she and her co‑owner did not understand the zoning restriction when they bought the property. The council suggested she provide a written request outlining the proposed use and attend the planning commission’s October meeting; staff said they would consult zoning specialists from the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEMCOG) for an opinion.
No formal action or variance was granted at the meeting. The council also discussed short-term rentals—previously tabled—and agreed to leave the issue unchanged because current zoning does not allow them.
