Hillman council OKs $50,000 MSHDA planning grant to update master plan and zoning

The Hillman Village Council on Sept. 17 voted unanimously to allow Village Manager Dave Post to accept a $50,000 planning and zoning grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) to update the village master plan and zoning.
Manager Dave Post told the council the award will fund updates to the master plan and zoning; President Dave Hornbacher moved to give Post permission to accept the grant, and Trustee Stephen Orlandi supported the motion. The council recorded an all‑in‑favor vote and the motion carried.
Council members and staff said the planning grant will support updating zoning language and the master plan to reflect current needs. The council did not set a public timeline during the meeting; Post and Chairman Ron Floer previously reviewed updated plans for a new bakery and will issue a zoning permit for that project pending standard review.
The council advised residents with zoning questions to submit written requests and to appear before the planning commission; the village will consult zoning specialists from NEMCOG as needed.
