Cohasset budget review shows 8.82% FY27 increase; district flags $1.32 million shortfall

At a joint meeting on Feb. 10, 2026, Cohasset school officials and local boards reviewed a proposed FY27 level-service budget that would increase spending 8.82%, roughly $2.1 million, and leave a funding shortfall of $1,320,980.

The School Committee asked Superintendent Sarah Shannon to prepare the level-service budget; the presentation showed that salaries, special-education out-of-district placements and utilities together account for about 88% of the Cohasset Public Schools budget. The district said an expected 3.5% increase in outside funding over FY26 still leaves the $1.32 million deficit.

School leaders outlined options to close the gap, including reductions in instructional technology, facilities, supplies and materials, professional development, curriculum and instruction, stipends and athletics, and projected retirement savings. Officials said the largest anticipated savings would come from staff reductions across all schools, the district and central office, estimated at approximately 10-15 full-time equivalent positions.

District officials also noted that Cohasset has been accepted into the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Core program, a process that typically leads to building projects requiring future debt allocations. The administration said it is considering whether a Proposition 2override would provide multi-year funding stability for the schools rather than seeking voter approval in consecutive years.

The joint meeting did not record a formal vote on the budget during the session. The Advisory Committee adjourned at 8:31 p.m. on a motion by Courtney Murphy, seconded by Tom Callahan; a roll-call vote was 8-0 in favor. Minutes were submitted by Leontina R. Marcotulli.
