Hillsdale Community Schools board approves personnel hires, accepts donations and adopts two resolutions

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale Community Schools Board of Education on Oct. 21 approved three personnel hires, accepted two community donations totaling $2,300 and adopted an annual summer tax resolution and an Insulin Litigation Resolution.
The board meeting, called to order by President Nicole Hoffman at 6:01 p.m. in the Hillsdale High School library, opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and attendance was recorded. The board approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the Sept. 16 regular meeting and the Treasurer's receipts for September 2024 (General Fund $488,834.51; Building & Site $119,474.85; Food Service $37,047.11; Activity $29,318.70).
The board approved bills payable listed separately, including checks to Arrow Swift Printing. That separate bills vote carried with 6 Ayes, 0 Nays and one abstention by Leslie Bennett-Granata.
In personnel actions the board moved, seconded and approved the hiring of Irene Barnard as a part-time adult education teacher; Mindy Rimer as a five-hour custodian at Davis Middle School; and Mike Robison as a 3.5-hour custodian at Bailey. Each hire was recorded as passing unanimously among voting members (7 Ayes, 0 Nays).
The board approved the Hillsdale High School Course Description Guide as presented. The board also accepted a $1,300 donation from Hillsdale Hospital to purchase an automated external defibrillator for the athletic department and a $1,000 donation from the Kiwanis Club of Hillsdale for robotics and holiday meals for students.
Superintendent Ted Davis reported several staff leaves and personnel changes to the board: teacher Emily Higbie (Gier) is on FMLA maternity leave Oct. 8, 2024–Feb. 3, 2025; Tonya Randolph (Davis Middle School teacher) began FMLA Oct. 3 for two weeks; Brianna Douge (Gier teacher) is on FMLA beginning at the start of school through Nov. 29; Heather Grigsby (Horizon teacher) was on FMLA Oct. 1–21; and the district recorded resignations from Aaron Cory (DMS teacher, effective Oct. 4), Shaun Isabell (Gier EA, effective Oct. 4) and Amanda Harding (K-5 teacher, resignation effective Nov. 1). The superintendent also noted that Victor Wells was hired as DMS Head Custodian effective Oct. 15 and that State Superintendent Dr. Rice invited new superintendents to a conference.
Under new/old business the board adopted the Annual Summer Tax Resolution and an Insulin Litigation Resolution, each by recorded vote of 7 Ayes, 0 Nays. The meeting included public comment in which two attendees identified themselves as candidates for the school board (Jeremy Adams and Chris Sumnar) and an additional candidate, Matt Gordon, spoke later in the meeting. Board member Pat Flannery commented on the Pumpkin Run event and Secretary Leslie Bennett-Granata thanked interested candidates.
President Nicole Hoffman adjourned the meeting at 6:23 p.m.
The board did not schedule any additional formal votes at the meeting; actions taken were recorded in adopted motions and resolutions and are reflected in the minutes.
