Board approves $183,916 contract with Johnson Controls for Centerville Elementary automation upgrade

The Queen Anne’s County Board of Education approved a sole-source contract with Johnson Controls on June 17 to retrofit Centerville Elementary School’s building automation system for $183,916.56, district officials said.
Sid Pender, the district’s chief operating officer, told the board the work would install controllers for hot and cold water systems, rooftop units, a makeup air unit and various exhaust fans and tie them into the energy-management architecture. "Once maintenance and Johnson Controls got into it, there's some more things that need to be done," Pender said, adding that the infrastructure will remain useful when the district later replaces HVAC units.
The fiscal impact was stated as $183,916.56 and would be paid from the local operating budget; Pender noted the district had previously accepted a $73,000 grant that had allowed initial work to begin. Board members had no substantive objections before moving to approve the contract.
What’s next: Facilities staff will oversee installation under the contract and continue planning for an FY28 HVAC replacement to use the new control infrastructure.
