Community Preservation Committee backs $5,000 recommendation to restore historic Tack painting

The Community Preservation Committee on Jan. 28 recommended that Town Meeting approve a $5,000 grant to Friends of Deerfield to support restoration of a historic Tack painting.
Chris Harris told the committee that the total project cost is $55,000, the applicants already have about $10,000 on hand, and a private donor has agreed to fund the remainder once the CPC grant is in place. Harris said the $5,000 from the CPC will cover removal of the painting and transport to a conservation studio in Florence.
The committee attached conditions to its recommendation: the painting will be owned by a nonprofit based in Deerfield and Deerfield residents will have reasonable access to view it. Lili Dwight moved to recommend the $5,000 grant; Geoff Brown seconded. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
The recommendation now goes to Town Meeting for final approval; Friends of Deerfield plans to begin restoration work only after all project funds have been secured.
