Hillsdale board approves multiple hires, accepts $7,673 in donations and adopts salary schedule

The Hillsdale Community Schools Board of Education on March 17 approved a slate of personnel hires, accepted several local donations totaling $7,673 and adopted a revised business manager salary schedule during a meeting at the Hillsdale High School library.
President Nicole Hoffman called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. and the board handled routine business, including approval of the February consent agenda and financial receipts. Treasurer’s receipts for February 2025 were presented: General Fund $2,592,349.54; Building & Site $250,391.01; Food Service $88,011.43; Activity $17,666.25. Expenditures for February were presented as well (General Fund $1,319,501.03; Building & Site $1,026.25; Food Service $79,252.11; Activity $32,176.04).
In personnel actions, the board approved the following hires and rehires: - Kayla Bowman as a 4.5-hour Davis Middle School food service cook (motion by board member Kathy Petersen, supported by Rebecca Portteus; recorded vote: 6 Ayes, 0 Nays). - Kia Charboneau as middle school assistant track coach (moved by Petersen, supported by Portteus; 6 Ayes, 0 Nays). - Katie Klco-Stebelton as Davis Middle School principal (moved by Petersen, supported by Dan LaRue; 7 Ayes, 0 Nays). - Shaun Isabell rehired as a Gier special-education educational assistant (moved by Chris Sumnar, supported by Petersen; 7 Ayes, 0 Nays). - Tess Wells for a 3.5-hour custodial position (moved by Petersen, supported by Sumnar; 7 Ayes, 0 Nays). - Nicole Huepenbecker as a Hillsdale High School secretary (moved by Petersen, supported by Portteus; 6 Ayes, 0 Nays).
The board also approved the business manager salary schedule as presented (moved by Petersen, supported by LaRue; 7 Ayes, 0 Nays).
Trustees accepted four donations to district programs and needs: $1,000 from the Hillsdale County Community Foundation (Kellogg Youth Advisory Fund); $1,400 from the Hillsdale Rotary Club; $1,000 from the Engle Foundation; and $4,273 from the HCCF Eric Keiber Community Impact Fund. Each donation was approved by voice vote and recorded in the meeting minutes.
Superintendent Ted Davis reported several staffing changes and district updates, including recent resignations (HHS secretary Chris Bernard; HHS alternative education special-education teacher Heather Grigsby) and a bus driver transition (Matt Frizzell resigned from regular driving duties but will remain available as a substitute). Davis also reported a visit from the Michigan Department of Education regarding least-restrictive-environment (LRE) considerations in special education, an ongoing Performance Services facility study, and that bids are opening for the Davis window project.
Under public comment, Superintendent Davis relayed a community communication that the gate at the Davis Middle School playground has been locked since October because of vandalism, vaping and garbage; the board record in this meeting does not show a formal response or an immediate remedy. Board member Rebecca Portteus thanked staff for continued work focused on students.
