Hillsdale board approves four hires as superintendent reports multiple resignations and insurance increase

Vice President Kathy Petersen called the Hillsdale Community Schools Board of Education to order Aug. 5, 2024, in the Hillsdale High School library. The board approved a consent agenda and unanimously voted to hire four employees, and Superintendent Ted Davis reported multiple resignations and an increase in the district's health-insurance costs.
The board approved the consent agenda — including the July 15, 2024 regular meeting minutes and finance reports — on a motion by Board member Rebecca Portteus and support from Pat Flannery. The motion passed, recorded as 4 Ayes and 0 Nays. The consent-level financial report listed July receipts of $145,634.71 to the General Fund and July expenditures of $1,464,007.43 to the General Fund.
Superintendent Ted Davis told the board that the district is managing a string of recent personnel changes. He listed recent resignations with dates where provided: Kay Waffle, district nurse (resigned 7/22); Marsha Webster, DMS principal (resigned 8/1); Todd Ebbert, bus driver (resigned 8/1); and Kimberly Waters, kindergarten teacher (resigned 8/1). Davis also noted a new hire listing for Michelle Packer at Bailey and said the district is pursuing grants and discussing partnerships with HCHC to address nursing coverage. Board members were also informed that LCAA health insurance premiums will increase by about 18 percent.
On personnel motions, Board member Rebecca Portteus moved and Pat Flannery supported hiring Kylene Bozung as a DMS math teacher; the motion passed 4–0. Portteus then moved and Dan LaRue supported hiring Summer Spurgeon as a DMS sixth-grade teacher; that motion passed 4–0. The board also approved hiring Cassidy Farmer as varsity assistant volleyball coach (moved by Portteus, supported by LaRue) and Shayla DuVall as a night-time custodian at Gier (moved by Portteus, supported by Flannery). Each personnel motion was recorded as passing with 4 Ayes and 0 Nays. Members listed as absent at roll call were Nicole Hoffman, Leslie Bennett-Granata and Eric Moore.
The board tabled two items under board affairs — the student handbook and the MASB 2024 Delegate Assembly — with no final action recorded in the minutes. During public comment, Gier Principal Becky LaFollette invited the community to the Gier Carnival on Aug. 14. Board member Rebecca Portteus offered the board's thanks to staff for their work over the summer.
Vice President Petersen adjourned the meeting at 6:28 p.m. The written minutes append a signature line listing Leslie Bennett-Granata as Secretary; the roll call at meeting start, however, listed Bennett-Granata among those absent.
