Sheriff flags aging 911 radio system and jail out-of-county population; engineer previews road closures

County Sheriff Kevin Glenn Denning told the Board of Supervisors the one-county 911 service-board meeting focused on the aging VHF radio system and the need to address interoperability and siren systems. "We're going to be pushing that out just ... and make sure everybody's very aware of where we're at," he said, and the county plans to expedite a transition for fire departments to the Essex 7800 MHz system.
Denning reported the jail had 23 out-of-county inmates out of about 90 adult inmates. "So, we'll be in good shape within the budget amendment and then tomorrow we meet with Carl and Nelson to hear some numbers..." he said, and noted the out-of-county budget was amended to $350,000 with a likely year-end spend near $310,000–$315,000.
Brian Carter, county engineer, warned that Old Marion Road will close Monday from the Iowa City Road intersection to Highway 61, probably through September, and that drivers should expect detours and temporary signage. "That will certainly be something that impacts people," Carter said, noting DOT coordination and detour/dust-control plans.
No formal board votes were taken on infrastructure changes during the meeting; the items were informational and staff indicated follow-up meetings and design comparisons were forthcoming.
