Salem Township supervisors ratified an advertisement to amend the township’s Restricted Roadways Ordinance to add Quarry, Thorn Run, McQuaide and Orr roads to the weight‑restricted highway list after receiving engineer studies identifying damage from heavy truck traffic.
Supervisor Kerry Jobe said the ratification was done to speed the process and protect roads that engineers had flagged. "We ran into an issue where there is a road that isn't on the weight restricted list and should be and is getting hit hard," Jobe said. The supervisors voted unanimously to ratify the advertisement and indicated the item will be considered at a special meeting for final action.
Resident Tim Kepple raised concerns that posting weight restrictions can lead to requirements that residents post bonds to permit heavy use while businesses hauling materials may not be similarly required to post bonds; supervisors noted the need for engineer studies before posting weight limits and cited neighbor complaints about heavy hauling damaging roads.
The board authorized the Township Engineer to perform studies on roads under consideration and acknowledged further procedural steps will be required before final adoption of weight restrictions.
