Committee adopts streamlined, standards‑based elementary report cards K–5

Dr. Jen Rubikava and other elementary leaders presented a plan to replace multiple report-card formats with a single standards-based K–5 system aligned to Massachusetts standards. "Standards-based report cards provide clearer feedback on student learning rather than a single letter grade," Dr. Rubikava told the committee.
Presenters said the new report cards will use four categories — exceeding, meeting, partially meeting or not yet meeting grade-level standards — and that the change will reduce lengthy, hard-to-read forms (the proposed kindergarten card fits on a single page). The district will release family-facing videos, translated guides and host Q&A sessions at fall open houses.
Committee members praised the clearer format and voted to move the recommendation from the curriculum subcommittee to the full committee. The full school committee recorded an affirmative roll-call and adopted the proposed elementary report cards.
Staff said the rollout will include principal briefings next week, PLC time for teachers to review the cards, and training at the start of next year; a translated FAQ and guidance videos are planned for November. The district will distribute rubrics to help ensure consistent application across classrooms.
The committee said it expects regular updates on family engagement and metrics showing whether the new cards improve clarity and communication.
