School committee advances Boston Focus pre‑K curriculum after staff detail implementation supports

Kelsey Bartlett, assistant director for early learning, recommended the Lynn Public Schools adopt Boston Focus on PreK for three- and four-year-olds, saying the materials are research-based and that Prism grant funding will cover books and classroom materials. "This high-quality, research-based curriculum provides educators with the tools, guidance, and flexibility needed to create engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences," Bartlett said.
Bartlett described a seven-member review team that used AIR rubric training and compared their ratings to published reviews before reaching consensus. She emphasized that adopting materials is only part of implementation: "It's the implementation plan, that ongoing cycle of coaching and support that's going to be absolutely vital," she said.
Committee members pressed for details about timelines and professional development. Bartlett said rollout would begin with training in August, continue through the school year, and include coaching cycles, PLC time and family-facing materials in multiple languages. She listed clear "criteria for success," including staff understanding of structure and shared expectations for year one.
Member Gaitley moved to approve the pre-K adoption recommendation and Member Satawite seconded the motion in committee. The subcommittee advanced the recommendation to the full committee and the full school committee later recorded its affirmative roll-call votes to adopt Boston Focus on PreK.
The adoption places emphasis on read-aloud–centered instruction and includes differentiated resources and translated home letters; Bartlett noted translations are available in 10 languages already. The committee asked staff to provide regular progress updates and to return with measures of implementation fidelity and teacher supports.
Next steps: staff will present implementation timelines and PD schedules to principals and begin teacher-facing training in August, with follow-up monitoring during the school year.
