Board approves removing 181st school day so school year ends before Juneteenth

The Stamford Board of Education voted to amend the district calendar so the 2025–26 school year will end on Thursday, June 18, avoiding an extension past Juneteenth.
The board chair read Resolution 24 at the March 10 special meeting and moved its adoption on the superintendent’s recommendation, saying the current calendar included an 181st day but state rules require only 180 instructional days. "This is an approval for eliminating the 181st day school day, so that the end of the school year, doesn't have to go past Juneteenth," the chair said.
Board member Becky asked why the district originally scheduled 181 days when the state minimum is 180. The chair replied that many districts build a one-day buffer into calendars to cover snow days or other unforeseen closures.
Julie seconded the motion. The chair called a voice/roll-call-style vote. Board members Adam, Julie, Antonia, Gabby, Becky, Dr. Jen Wirly, Chris and Prasad each registered yes; the chair also voted yes. The motion passed and the resolution was approved.
The chair adjourned the special meeting at about 6:36 p.m. No amendments, abstentions or opposing votes were recorded during the meeting.
