Benton County proclaims America250 and celebrates 100 years of its courthouse

Benton County commissioners voted June 2 to approve a proclamation recognizing America250 and the 100th anniversary of the Benton County Courthouse, which the county’s presentation said officially opened on July 5, 1926.
Katie Duvall, the county communication specialist, presented the proposed commemoration plan. She described a year of activities including a historical poster on display at the courthouse, a commemorative centennial coin, a dawn-redwood tree planting on the courthouse lawn and facility refreshes such as new directory screens and updated signage.
Duvall said the county has formed an informal planning committee with local representatives in Prosser and county administrative staff, and that additional items under consideration include a time capsule, professional photography of the courthouse and a new county flag. Commissioners praised facilities and communications staff for courthouse improvements and supported the proclamation.
Commissioner McKay moved to approve the proclamation and the motion carried by voice vote. The proclamation authorizes the county to recognize the centennial through the described activities; no budget appropriation was made during the meeting.
