Superintendent highlights readiness for 94,000 students; JCPS recognizes schools and summer programs

Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood told the June 30 board meeting that district teams are preparing schools, finalizing staffing and balancing budgets so that when classes resume in August about "94,000 students and nearly 18,000 employees" will be ready for the school year.
Chief Carolyn Callahan presented recognitions and highlighted that Jeffersontown High School Freshman Academy attained National Career Academy Coalition recognition and Fern Creek High School Tech and Trades Academy reached NCAC Model Academy status. Callahan also thanked Nutrition Services for operating dozens of USDA-funded summer meal sites and mobile routes that serve people 18 and younger.
Callahan praised multiple student achievements, including winners of TARC's 2026 bus-design contest, and told a story of staff organizing roughly 2,300 birthday cards for a hospitalized 7-year-old student awaiting a heart transplant. She closed recognitions by noting the evening marked retirements and said it was her final night presenting recognitions.
