Staff outlines summer programs, pool hours and upcoming community events in San Fernando

City staff gave the San Fernando Education Commission a detailed update on summer programming, community resources and scheduled events during the June 30 meeting.

A staff member told commissioners the city’s summer day camp runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and free lunch is available for attendees. Staff also listed youth sports clinics (age ranges and fee schedules), open pickleball and tennis hours at Las Palmas and Pioneer parks, karate and youth basketball sessions, and adult fitness offerings.

Staff described several programs led or supported by UCLA Head Start, including vision and hearing screenings for children ages 0–5, parenting support classes and a mobile classroom at Recreation Park that runs Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The mobile classroom is targeted to children 0–5 and offers instructor-led activities and referrals.

The staff update included community resources such as a weekly free fresh-produce distribution at 1002 Mott Street on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and a free summer-meal service for children ages 1–18 at Recreation Park from about 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Senior programs and fee details were shared, as well as registration notes for limited farmer’s-market gift cards distributed on July 5.

Staff also outlined upcoming events: a July 4 drone show at Recreation Park beginning at 9 p.m.; family movies in the park on July 17, 24 and 31; concerts at Pioneer Park and Las Palmas Park on Aug. 15 and Aug. 22; and Foodzilla on Aug. 25 as part of the city’s centennial celebrations.

Commissioners asked staff to improve event publicity timing and discussed partnerships with UCLA and other community organizations. The staff presenter said materials and schedules will be posted and the city’s My San Fernando app is available for reporting issues and viewing program details.
