The San Fernando Education Commission on June 30 discussed ways to expand teacher recognition and increase student scholarship awards while agreeing to add a proposed memorandum of understanding with the Los Angeles Unified School District to a future agenda.
Chair Angel Zobel Rodriguez announced that the district’s strategic plan for 2026–2030 will be published and said the commission will share the link; she also noted that “the superintendent, Andres Cheit… has been named the permanent superintendent for the entire district,” emphasizing his connection to the community.
Commissioners spent substantial time on the Teacher Spotlight, debating how nominees should be identified. Vice Chair David Gouveia proposed soliciting administrator nominations to ensure consistent, timely submissions and suggested holding recognitions quarterly with modest awards such as gift certificates and flowers. “Just give us a name, and we will work everything behind it,” Gouveia said, arguing the commission can handle logistics if schools supply nominees.
The scholarship program drew concern about award size. Commissioners noted past award figures of $250 and $500 and said the current base has been $500. Gouveia and others said the amounts feel small compared with some local organizations and urged exploring additional funding so the awards can increase; the commission agreed to follow up after the city council’s funding discussions. Chair Zobel Rodriguez reminded commissioners to submit any event receipts before the end of the fiscal year.
On district partnership, commissioners agreed to add an agenda item next month to discuss a memo of understanding or “educational compact” with LAUSD and to invite the new superintendent to present if schedules allow. The commission also flagged a related item—reviewing the commission’s relationship with LAUSD and any needed MOU—so members and staff can prepare background materials.
Procedurally, the commission approved the meeting agenda, the consent calendar and a package of July agenda items by roll call vote (the four commissioners present voted yes; one member was absent). Chair Zobel Rodriguez closed the meeting with instructions to staff to circulate materials and to agendize the MOU discussion for the next meeting.
