Grant Township Board approves consent agenda; hears zoning, fire, cemetery and service updates

At its Oct. 6 meeting the Grant Township Board approved the consent agenda and minutes, reviewed zoning permits and a stop-work order, heard a fire department facilities update, discussed cemetery tree removals and placement of a new sign, and set a flu clinic for Oct. 30 and a Nov. 3 presentation by True North.
Grant Township Supervisor Stanley VanSingel called the Oct. 6, 2025, meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., opened with a prayer and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The board unanimously approved the consent agenda and the minutes from the Sept. 8 meeting after a motion by Laura Rodriguez and a second from Edith Elsenheimer.
Clerk Gladys VeltKamp told the board there were no 'after audit' bills this month and distributed copies of the annual audit report for review ahead of next month’s approval. Kim provided the zoning report, saying permits issued in September covered covered porches, decks, additions, outdoor wood stoves and demolitions. Kim said the Planning Commission approved a Special Land Use with conditions and that permit completion and associated fees are pending. Kim also reported a stop-work order had been issued on a new-construction site because no permits were applied for prior to building.
Board member Max Mellon presented the fire department financial report and noted that a new fire representative, John King, attended his first meeting. Mellon said the fire board is discussing concrete repairs in front of the building, where water pools and there is a significant drop from the roadway; the board is also weighing whether to build a pole barn on adjoining property to add space and avoid the cost of concrete. Mellon said he will refer the feasibility question back to the fire board.
The Code Enforcement Officer delivered a verbal report describing multiple citations issued during the month and a stop-work order previously mentioned; the officer also updated the board on the current location of a seasonal pumpkin stand.
Under old business the board reviewed cemetery maintenance: two trees remain to be removed and are expected to be cleared within about a week, new trees are scheduled for planting the third week of the month, and Supervisor VanSingel said three dying trees in a new, unopened section should be replaced when the new plantings occur. The board discussed potential damage to a new cemetery sign from snowplows; Clerk VeltKamp said she will contact the sign company about placement concerns.
In new business the board confirmed a flu shot clinic will be held at the township on Oct. 30 from 1–3 p.m. and noted that Carmen Faulkner of True North is scheduled to present at the next meeting, Nov. 3, on community services available for seniors. With no residents in attendance for public comment, the meeting adjourned at 7:52 p.m. The next regular meeting is set for Monday, Nov. 3, 2025.
