Grant Township approves Spruce Ave conditional rezoning; appoints John King to fire board

Grant Township Board approved a conditional rezoning amendment for property on Spruce Ave and handled several administrative items at its Sept. 8 meeting held at 7 p.m.
The board approved the conditional rezoning ordinance amendment on a roll-call vote of 4 Yeas, 0 Nays and 1 Abstain; the board directed the ordinance be published the week of Sept. 15 with an effective date of Sept. 22, 2025. The Planning Commission had recommended approval before the board’s vote, according to Kim, the township zoning staff who presented permit and Planning Commission activity.
In other business, the board appointed John King to fill a vacancy on the township fire board following the death of longtime member Pete Dame. Max Mellon delivered the fire report and Stan (Stanley) VanSingel introduced John King, who said he is a township resident and previously served on the Planning Commission and currently serves on the Board of Appeals. Gladys VeltKamp, the township clerk, moved to appoint King and Max Mellon seconded; the motion passed unanimously. King is scheduled to begin attending board fire meetings on the fourth Monday of September (Sept. 22) at City Hall.
The board reviewed and approved a Consent Judgment submitted by the attorney Cliff Bloom’s office; Edith Elsenheimer moved to approve and Laura Rodriguez seconded. The signed document will be forwarded to the attorney’s office by Clerk Gladys VeltKamp.
Gladys VeltKamp also presented examples of new cemetery signs and said the board will set a date for members to meet and review sign locations. The board approved a quote from Integrity to purchase round table cart(s); Edith Elsenheimer moved to order the cart(s), Laura Rodriguez seconded, and the purchase was authorized pending confirmation from the vendor whether one or two carts are needed.
The Code Officer provided the monthly code-enforcement report, described the practice of issuing a letter and ordinance copy when visiting properties in violation, and said he will issue a stop-work order on a property that was brought to his attention. The clerk reported there were no after-audit bills for the month.
The meeting concluded at 7:40 p.m. The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6, 2025.
