Board provides first-ever budget support to student newspaper Trident; students present awards and new website

"My name is Emily Clark, and I am the advisor of the Trinity Trident newspaper," Emily Clark said, identifying herself as the faculty advisor and an English teacher. Clark introduced student journalists who described the paper's production: a monthly print edition of roughly 1,000 copies, five main sections (news, sports, arts, features and opinions), and a new website launched in January with help from a website manager named Elizabeth Forseier.
Students outlined recent awards the Trident has won (national recognition from the American Scholastic Press Association in recent years and placements at the Yale Daily News High School Journal Symposium) and highlighted recurring features such as a senior intentions center spread. The students invited board and community support for upcoming issues and events.
The presentation also referenced the board's budget support: a staff member stated that "for the first time ever the board has provided some support in the budget for the Trident," and the students thanked the board for that assistance. No formal vote occurred during the presentation; the funding reference described a budget allocation already included in the district budget process.
Board members asked follow-up questions on logistics and the new Springfest and Penguin Plunge events that will support school activities and charities; students said Springfest plans are preliminary and the Penguin Plunge will raise funds for the Amity Unified Sports Team and Special Olympics Connecticut.
The board did not take further action on the Trident presentation during the meeting. The students concluded by thanking the board for the support and showcasing the publication's work.
