The Stamford School District policy committee voted 4-0 to approve an amendment to policy 51-34 covering married and pregnant students, moving the item to the board's consent agenda.
Chair Gabby said the item came to the committee at the request of student leaders. Chris, a district staff member, told the committee the district "took [a] current model policy" to replace language that was nearly 26 years old: "This policy was ripe for update. It was last updated almost 26 years ago."
Committee members welcomed the update. Dr. Becky Hammond said the change is timely and noted that many district policies are overdue for review; she urged staff to continue updating older policies across the district. Chair Gabby agreed that the district has "gotta update these policies" to reflect current needs and legal guidance.
Chair Gabby called the vote; four members voted in favor, with one member absent, producing a 4-0 committee vote. The chair said the amended policy will be included on the regular board meeting consent agenda.
