Maynard School Committee approves competency‑determination policy (IKFD)

A motion to approve policy IKFD, the district's competency-determination process, was made and taken up by the Maynard School Committee on Dec. 11 and carried during the meeting.

Committee members and staff described competency determination as an internal check to identify students who need additional academic support after the end of 10th grade so that the district can provide targeted interventions in grades 11 and 12. The committee discussed how competency checks differ from graduation requirements: competency determination prompts support and planning (tutoring blocks, counseling check-ins, curriculum director involvement) rather than an automatic denial of a diploma.

Staff explained that identified students would receive coordinated supports — meetings with guidance, tutoring, curriculum interventions and social-emotional check-ins — to place them on track for graduation. The committee noted that some families might pursue appeals or alternate routes if they believed a student’s circumstances had changed (for example, by completing summer coursework), and the policy discussion referenced existing state guidance.
