Planning commission votes not to recommend recreational marijuana proposal after public hearing

The Bronson Planning Commission voted to not recommend forwarding a proposal to allow recreational marijuana facilities to the city council following a public hearing in which residents and at least one council member presented competing views.

Planning staff opened the public hearing and told commissioners they had requested community input before deciding whether to recommend the proposal to council. Residents raised concerns about crowds, parking and traffic near retail dispensaries, the smell from cultivation operations, and the community image. One resident said, "It’s disgusting. People lining up and walking around outside stoned out," expressing worries about quality-of-life impacts. Another resident argued retail revenue would be largely eaten up by increased emergency-service and policing costs.

Rick Domenez, who identified himself as a city council member, said he had researched other towns and "couldn't find anything negative" in conversations with local police officers and operators, and reported that many facilities keep their properties well maintained. By contrast, Kim Erwin, identifying herself as a pastor of the Vineyard and a parent, urged the commission to reject the proposal: "Recreational marijuana does not lead us to better health or to better happiness," she said, arguing the city should pursue other family-friendly economic opportunities.

Planning staff and the chair noted state and local distance restrictions from schools and churches limit where retail or grow facilities could locate in Bronson. After discussion and review of maps, a motion to not recommend forwarding the measure to city council was moved and adopted by voice vote.

The commission’s action was framed as a recommendation to the city council; the city council remains the body that would take any binding legislative action on allowing recreational marijuana facilities and may consider written comments submitted by residents.
