Elm River Township School Board approves visitor donation, schedules events and asks staff to inquire about parking-lot repave

The Elm River Township School Board met Oct. 21 in Winona and approved an $80 donation left by recent visitors to be used for student benefit. The action was recorded as unanimous after the board reviewed correspondence and financial items.
Board members also approved and signed a raffle license noted in correspondence and reviewed the Can Drive fundraising total, which the minutes list at $6,286. The board publicly thanked Pepsi of Houghton for its support of the fundraiser.
Under old business the board reported the playground equipment fund is healthy and said the district will seek to get on a contractors schedule as soon as possible. In new business the board set the Christmas program and raffle for Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and scheduled a Halloween trunk-or-treat event for Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.; the board asked staff to solicit donations for the raffle.
The minutes record that Elm River Township School District staff will also inquire about getting the school parking lot adjacent to Winona Road repaved as part of planned Houghton County Road Commission work to be done summer 2025. The board approved accepting the $80 donation for student benefit, with all members recorded as in favor.
Procedural motions that appear in the minutes include approval of the agenda (moved by Jim Plutchak, seconded by Jason Moilanen) and approval of the prior minutes (moved by Joyce Pirhonen, seconded by Jim Plutchak); both motions carried. The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m. after a motion to adjourn by Jim Plutchak, seconded by Joyce Pirhonen.
The board set its next meeting for Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
