Conservation board reviews budgets, infrastructure updates and sets shelter fee

At its June 2 meeting, the Chickasaw County Conservation Board reviewed departmental budget planning and several operational projects and updates.
Director Chad Humpal reported on discussions about the department’s fiscal year 2026 and 2027 budgets. The minutes record presentation and discussion but do not show a formal budget vote.

Board members reviewed plans for a new cold storage building. Bids for the cold storage building were due June 5 at 10:00 a.m. and were scheduled to be opened at the Board of Supervisors meeting on June 8.
The board reached consensus to continue working with Hawkeye Farm Services on a tree-planting effort at Gilmore Wapsi and to send payment for the original planting as previously arranged.
Members also discussed accessibility and water management at Airport Lake. Staff reported meeting twice with an Iowa DNR engineer and an area biologist and proposed plugging an 8-inch intake to test whether it is causing the lake overflow or leak.
The board approved a motion to set Twin Ponds Nature Center shelter rental at $50 per day and discussed incorporating shelter fees into an online reservation system for Twin Ponds, Airport Lake, and Springbrook Recreation.
The minutes list continuing department updates, environmental education and maintenance reports, and note the 2025 Fall Conference dates as September 15–17, 2026, in Linn County. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
