The City of Tega Cay Stormwater and Environmental Committee unanimously approved the minutes from its May 12, 2025, meeting and spent the bulk of its July 21 meeting planning volunteer stormwater programs and mapping city drains.
Chairwoman Heather Jones said the committee will begin by compiling maps of city‑owned drains and contacting city departments for existing data. Committee member Jerry Church proposed coordinating efforts with the Tega Cay Fire Department and Public Works to create a comprehensive map of drains that could be used to define volunteer service zones.
Staff member Ben Buchanan reported he had contacted the coordinator for the Fort Mill Adopt‑a‑Stream program and said training for shore stabilization and Adopt‑a‑Stream activities has been pushed to August. Buchanan identified candidate waterways for volunteer work, including Torrence Creek (city‑owned, behind Windhaven), the Niven's Creek feeder running from ponds behind the Walmart and Trinity Townhomes (city‑controlled but bordering Duke property and therefore subject to additional oversight), and the Johnnytown Branch in Lakeridge/Windell Woods that connects to county property. The committee discussed jurisdictional constraints where private or utility‑owned land abuts city waterways and the need for supervision in those locations.
Vice‑Chairwoman Maureen Norcutt volunteered to contact Caroline Hasty about securing a booth at Catawba Fest for public outreach. The committee reviewed a map prepared by Lauren Kohut using York County GIS data to identify green spaces and potential volunteer focus areas.
Committee members emphasized community interest in stormwater issues and agreed to prioritize mapping, outreach at Catawba Fest, and sending representatives to Fort Mill training when schedules permit. The committee scheduled its next meeting for Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. and adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
Actions at the meeting included the formal approval of the May 12, 2025, minutes and a unanimous motion to adjourn.
