Historic Bell Log Cabin project seeks city support as public hearing is set

Amy Pieper, representing Crawford County Historical Preservation, asked the Denison City Council on Jan. 7 for city support to restore the Bell Log Cabin and said the restoration will cost $100,000. "The overall project will cost $100,000.00," Pieper said, adding that CCHP has secured $61,000 and is awaiting additional grants.
Pieper told the council CCHP needs roughly $4,000 more to complete a Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant application and asked the city for funding and county backing. She said the contractor plans to begin work at the end of January after a pending change of ownership.
Council members asked that the item appear on the next council agenda and requested that CCHP present the request to the Crawford County Supervisors. Separately at the Jan. 7 meeting the council adopted Resolution #2025-04 to set a public hearing on an ordinance to dispose of the Bell Log Cabin; the resolution set the hearing for Jan. 7, 2025, at 5:05 p.m. and was adopted unanimously.
If the city or county approves financial support, Pieper said CCHP would proceed with the grant application and contractor scheduling. The council did not take final funding action at the Jan. 7 meeting and asked staff to place the request on an upcoming agenda for fuller consideration.
