The Malden City Council granted two National Grid petitions on Wednesday night subject to conditions designed to protect public rights-of-way, cemetery processions and street trees.
The first petition (paper 284-26) would install a JO pole (P2501-84) on Forest Street. Councilors discussed an easement related to cemetery grounds and agreed the petition should proceed only pending that easement and with conditions that the engineer be called when Dig Safe is notified and that streets and sidewalks be restored to the director of public works’ satisfaction; council also asked National Grid to coordinate with the cemetery superintendent to avoid work during funeral processions. Councilor Taylor moved to grant the petition with those conditions; the motion carried.
The second approved petition (paper 286-26) authorized underground conduit and a handhold to serve 300 Salem Street, replacing deteriorating conduit and upgrading private service. The council granted that petition with the same Dig Safe and restoration conditions and added a requirement that the tree warden be consulted and any impacted trees be replaced. Councilor Taylor moved to grant paper 286-26; Councilor Colon-Hayes seconded and the motion passed.
Both approvals included routine restoration and safety conditions and task the city engineer and Public Works with oversight during construction.
