Benton Harbor board elects officers, consolidates committees and tables committee‑of‑the‑whole decision

Des Robinson was elected president of the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education at the board’s Jan. 7 organizational meeting, keeping the temporary chair in place as trustees completed officer elections.
The board also elected Trenton Bowens as vice president, Matthew Bradley as treasurer and Ronaldo Triplet as secretary. Nomination and roll‑call voting occurred during the organizational portion of the special meeting; Robinson said she will arrange presidential training for trustees who are interested in learning duties during the first quarter of the year.
The meeting’s central policy debate focused on two staff reports about committee structure. Staff report D2, which the board approved, consolidates standing committees into four groups: a facilities & finance/operations committee, a curriculum & student support services committee, a policy & discipline committee, and retains a human resources (HR) committee. The motion to approve D2 passed with trustees Robinson, Bowens, Triplet and Gavin voting yes and trustees Bradley, Rocket Martin and Doyle voting no.
Trustee Gavin had proposed a broader change under staff report D1 (option 2A) to eliminate individual committees and use work sessions as a committee of the whole. Trustees engaged in an extended debate about training needs, transparency and the risks of exposing personnel matters in public. After discussion the board voted to table D1 until the February regular meeting and scheduled a retreat/training to examine a committee‑of‑the‑whole approach; the tabling motion passed with one dissent.
The board also reaffirmed membership in the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), naming Treasurer Bradley as the board’s MASB representative and Rocket Martin and trustee Gavin as alternates. Other organizational items approved included bylaws, adjusted meeting dates and bank depository resolutions.
The organizational meeting included public comment and trustee discussion about process and governance. Several trustees emphasized the need for clearer committee work, fewer duplicative meetings and improved staff support. The board adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
What happens next: The board scheduled a retreat on Jan. 28 to provide training on committee structures and set D1 for reconsideration at the Feb. regular meeting; staff will return with any clarifications and materials needed for that debate.
