Deep River selectmen approve small tax refunds, table multiple appointments and set May 5 budget referenda

At their April 14 meeting, the Deep River Board of Selectmen approved two tax refunds amounting to $201.22 and conducted routine town business, including scheduling school budget referenda for May 5, 2026.
Selectperson Duane Gates moved to approve the two tax refunds; First Selectman Carol Jones seconded the motion, which passed 2–0. The board discussed the nomination of Juanita Figueroa to the Community Health Committee (term through Dec. 1, 2026) but tabled the appointment until the next meeting. Likewise, discussions about forming a Harbor Management Commission — including potential harbor master and deputy roles and the need for an enabling ordinance — and a proposal to establish a 5–7 member Arts and Culture Committee were both tabled.
Board members received a Region 4 School Consolidation Task Force update and noted a volunteer is needed for a Teaching and Learning Task Force; the board has issued a public update letter. During a second audience-of-citizens session a resident raised a pothole concern near Devin Field and reported Connecticut Department of Transportation was contacted because the road is state maintained.
In her selectman’s report, First Selectman Carol Jones said the town will issue an RFP for brush chipping services (three times annually), the DPW director is preparing a paving RFP expected within two weeks, transfer-station signage is ready, and the town website is due to transition to a new platform in about two weeks. Upcoming volunteer events include a Winthrop Cemetery clean-up on May 2, a Parks & Recreation fishing tournament on May 9, and Community Warriors Day on May 21.
A motion to adjourn was moved by Duane Gates, seconded by Carol Jones, and passed 2–0 at 6:40 PM.
