Hazel Park officials on March 16 advanced a substantial update to the city's commercial marijuana regulations, approving revisions to Municipal Code Title 5, Chapter 5.04 on a first-reading motion.
Amanda Mason, the city's cannabis coordinator, explained the revision packages incorporate lessons learned since the ordinance's adoption, reduce redundancies with state and zoning standards, and streamline enforcement. A notable change shortens operating hours from the previous 2 a.m. allowance for some facilities to 12 a.m. and revises how consumption lounges are treated.
Mason said the changes move certain technical filings (for example, the knockbox) to the fire department for operational access; dumpster enclosures and other zoning-specific items will be addressed through zoning and special land-use review. Council members discussed consumption lounges at length, noting state-level regulations and security/exhaust-system requirements pose practical constraints. Members said the city's ordinance can limit or permit consumption lounges but state law and CRA (Cannabis Regulatory Agency) rules largely determine feasibility.
The council moved to approve the ordinance updates and recorded the motion as passed on first reading. Administration indicated staff will continue to refine the code as state rules and market conditions evolve.
