At its Jan. 28 meeting the Sullivan's Island Town Council approved a series of unanimous motions covering ceremonial recognition, project funding applications and intergovernmental agreements.
Mayor Patrick M. O'Neil read and the council adopted a resolution naming the Maritime Forest Nature Trail in honor of Lawrence D. Middaugh and Susan J. Middaugh; Mrs. Middaugh received a standing ovation. Councilmember Gary Visser moved to adopt the resolution, and Councilmember Scott Millimet seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The council approved minutes for the Nov. 19, 2024 and Dec. 17, 2024 regular meetings (motions by Councilmember Visser, seconded by Mayor Pro‑Tem Justin Novak) and clarified a December amendment regarding beach fire locations. Mayor Pro‑Tem Novak moved (seconded by Councilmember Millimet) to clarify that available fire permit locations include Stations 22, 23 and 25 with a rotation among those locations and a limit of two fires per night on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; seasonality of permits (Oct. 1–Apr. 30) was confirmed and the clarification passed unanimously.
Councilmember Gary Visser moved (seconded by Councilmember Ned Higgins) to approve the Station 24 boardwalk project and adopt a Resolution with Findings of Fact to support a Charleston County Greenbelt grant application. The findings described the project as designing and replacing the boardwalk at Station 24 to be elevated over floodwater, extending to the primary dune, providing public walkway and emergency access, supporting educational access, and enhancing scenic value. The motion passed unanimously and staff were directed to proceed with the Greenbelt application.
Following an executive session on personnel and legal matters, council returned to open session, ratified Law Enforcement Assistance and Support Agreements with North Charleston PD, Charleston PD, Folly Beach Department of Public Safety, Mount Pleasant PD, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, and Isle of Palms PD, and approved the FY2025 Police Department classification and compensation plan. All actions taken after the executive session were unanimous. The meeting adjourned at 8:13 p.m.
During public comment Melanie Burkhold (1660 Atlantic Ave) raised concerns and suggestions about the Stith Park renovation; the council received the comment for the record but did not take formal action on the renovation at this meeting.
