Nash County approves amended CDBG award to buy EMS stretchers, stair equipment

The Nash County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG‑CV) project ordinance at a June 29 special meeting to use newly awarded state funds to buy additional stretcher equipment and a stair‑pro device for the county Emergency Medical Services department.

Nikki Stanton, who presented the grant amendment, told the board the award came with a deadline that required the special meeting. Stanton said the state’s commerce office approved additional funding and that staff proposed using the funds on EMS equipment because those items remained eligible and unfinished under prior approvals. The dollar amount appears unclear in the transcript record; staff described the award as an additional grant allocation and said two recent amendments together totaled $657,000.

Commissioner Davis asked whether the funds could instead be applied to a planned home purchase tied to the health‑department relocation. Stanton replied that these particular funds are CDBG‑CV (coronavirus‑related) and must be spent on eligible expenses already approved by the program; because EMS equipment fit the allowable uses, staff recommended the purchase of stretchers and the stair‑pro.

During discussion a board member praised county staff for securing the awards, singling out “Emily” and finance staff including Dale Griffin for timely administration. Stanton also said Emily had applied for an additional $100,000 grant toward the project.

Commissioner Howell moved to accept the amended grant project ordinance; Commissioner Gwen Wilkins seconded. The board approved the motion by voice vote and the amendment carried.

The amendment authorizes staff to proceed with procurement of the specified EMS equipment under the grant terms; staff indicated they will return with project details and recommendations for the board once procurement plans are finalized.
