Brewton council approves contract termination and moves tax collection to state agency starting Oct. 1

Brewton — The Brewton City Council unanimously approved a motion to terminate its contract with Avenue Insights and Analysis and separately approved a resolution to have the Alabama Department of Revenue administer and collect Brewton City taxes beginning Oct. 1 if implemented.
Councilor Watson moved to approve resolution 26-0622-1 to terminate the contract with Avenue Insights and Analysis and Councilor Broughton seconded; after no discussion councilors vocalized assent and the resolution was approved. For the tax administration item, the mayor introduced a measure to authorize the Alabama Department of Revenue to administer and collect city taxes; Councilor Broughton moved for approval, Councilor Barton seconded, and the measure passed.
City staff told the council that the change in tax administration would take effect Oct. 1 if implemented and that the city must give the existing vendor 90 days' notice. A council member reiterated the timeline, asking, "Brewton, this service will will kick in October 1 with the if it passes?" and staff replied, "Correct. We have to give the other company 90 days notice." No further discussion or amendment of the resolutions occurred.
Both votes were recorded by vocal roll call; the council approved the two resolutions and moved on to subsequent agenda items.
