Council accepts $10,000 THSO grant for police department

The Spencer City Council voted Oct. 24 to accept a $10,000 Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) grant for the police department. Chief Scott Garing told the council the grant has increased from $5,000 in prior years to $10,000 this year and described the spending plan: $8,000 may be used for supplies, telephone/postage, equipment rentals and maintenance, and printing/publications; $2,000 will cover salaries, benefits and taxes.
Alderman Jerry Blankenship moved to accept the THSO grant and Alderman Darrell Nance seconded the motion. The roll call was unanimous. Chief Garing said there is no local match required for the grant.
The council did not attach additional conditions to the grant acceptance; the award will be administered through the police department’s budget and purchasing processes.
